Egress Window Installation

A nicely finished basement is a huge bonus for any home. Extra living space, more bedrooms, sometimes even a game area or bonus kitchen. Basement windows will let in some natural light, but to really brighten a basement (as well as make it safe) you want egress windows.

A basement egress window is large enough and low enough, to easily be used as an escape route in case of an emergency. International Housing Code requires one egress window in every basement bedroom as well as in the living space. These codes include standards for window size and distance from the floor. Most regular basement windows cannot be considered escape routes, and just replacing it with a bigger window isn’t enough! Making sure there is adequate drainage around the escape route is just as important as the window itself. You don’t want your emergency exit to become a swimming pool!

A properly installed, nicely landscaped egress window will often even add value to your home! Just like a nicely finished basement will add to your home’s resale value. So, if you’re considering adding living space to your basement, give Ram Jack a call! We will go over your plans and explain how many windows you will need, and the best place to put them. If you’ve already finished the basement and didn’t know about escape routes, we are happy to help get your home up to code and up the safety factor.
