Where do I look? Closeup of crack above doorway

The answer to this question isn’t too complicated. Look everywhere! We don’t mean to look at every detail, but all of the main stuff. It’s not as overwhelming as it sounds. Take a look at all of your floors, walls, and ceilings. Inspect your windows and doors. Walk all around the exterior of your home, examining the walls, bricks, and foundation near the ground. To perform an at home foundation inspection, it’s really as simple as doing a walk through your home and around your home’s exterior.

What do I look for?

Cracked brick foundationThere are a few tell-tale signs of foundation problems to look for during foundation inspection. First, look for cracks. If you see cracks in the stucco, brick, walls, or floors, it may mean there is foundation damage. Check the width to see if they are hairline or wider than a half inch.

Second, look for unevenness and sloping. Are the floors leaning? Are the walls or ceiling no longer square with one another? Does it look like a wall is leaning? All of these may signify foundation issues.

Third, look for ill-fitting windows and doors. Quickly open and close all of the doors and windows in your home. Do they move smoothly, or do they catch? If they don’t fit the way they used to, it may mean underlying foundation settlement.

Fourth, look for gaps. If you notice openings around exterior window frames or new gaps between the doors and walls, it may mean foundation settlement.
