SUB FLOOR DRAINAGE SYSTEMS

DO’S DON’TS AND COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS.

How do I clean up any dust?

Removing concrete from the basement floor does create a certain amount of dust. While SGWP uses the latest dust suppression methods, there will be a certain amount of dust. The best procedure is to broom sweep the area, then mop the floor with a cleaning solution of your choice.

Is there anything I need to do to the new concrete after the completion of my project?

Yes, it is recommended that you lightly mist the new concrete once a day for the first 3-5 days. Doing this significantly helps the concrete to properly cure and reduce the chance of shrinkage cracking.

When can I walk on the concrete?

You can usually walk on freshly poured concrete after 24 hours. Do not place any heavy items on the new concrete for at least 72 hours.

What if the floor cracks?

All concrete can crack; however, the new sub floor drainage system will prevent water from coming up through any cracks.

After the concrete has dried can some areas become discolored or even wet to the touch? And is this normal?

Yes, remember concrete is a porous materiel it has capillaries in it. The first thing to keep in mind is it can take anywhere from 30-90 days for freshly poured concrete to cure 80%. And in some cases even longer depending on the amount of humidity in your home. During this time excess water is evaporating up through the concrete. Also sweating of the concrete can occur during periods of heavy rainfall or when large amounts of water are running through the sub floor drainage system. This can cause areas of condensation to form creating small pools of water kind of like you’ll notice on windows in your home when you have large amounts of humidity or during extremely hot or cold days.

How can I tell the difference between condensation and seepage?

Seepage typically starts as an identifiable water spot or trickle that will run across the floor searching for a low spot to pool in. condensation is an area that usually will form in spots or general areas.

What else can cause condensation to form?

Poor insulation, thin concrete floors, lack of proper ventilation can all cause excess humidity which may help to create condensation.

Can I finish my basement after my system is complete?

Sure but keep the following in mind.

A. Can I drive or shoot nails into the concrete floors or walls?

No it is not recommended, remember you have a water drainage system running under your floor. And you should never drive or shoot nails into your foundations walls either.

B. For your walls it is recommended that you install a wall membrane prior to finishing your walls to help reduce / moisture and humidity that may come through the pours of your foundations walls. (SGWP can install one for you we have several to choose from.) This will help protect the finishing products and help extend the lifespan of those products.

C. For framing your walls glue down the sill plate to the floor and attach the top plate to the ceiling joist above, then install your studs between them. Your carpenter can help better explain this to you.

D. For finishing your basement floor it is recommended that you install Hot Floor. Which is a system that SGWP can install that will help reduce / moisture and humidity through the open pores of your floor. Which will make your floor warmer and also help extend the lifespan of your flooring products.

E. Remember also that sub floor drainage systems don’t protect you from sewer backup issues.

F. Remember to maintain your new sub floor drainage system, sump pump, and battery backup system for continued piece of mind.

What should I do if I think that I’m still having a seepage problem?

A. Try to determine if it is seepage, condensation or (sewer backup*) issue. Especially after a rainfall or during times of heavy water running through your drainage system.

B. Check your sump pumps. If the sump pump is not operating properly your system simply wont work! This can cause water to come out of the sump basin, around the perimeter of the floor behind the drainage flange.

C. Check the battery backup system for proper operation, remember when you experience power failure your main pump wont work.

C. Mark the area or area’s where you notice the seepage with something this will aid us in determining what the issue is.

D. Finally call our production team to arrange for a service appointment.
