Helical Pilings Stabilize Retaining Walls

Although these powerful structures are designed to hold back unstable earth and buttress level surfaces, they can’t do their job alone. To ensure that your retaining wall performs as it’s supposed to, you need helical pilings.

What Are Helical Pilings?

Helical pilings are state-of-the-art support structures that drive deep into the dirt and rock beneath and around retaining walls. They’re typically comprised of two parts: steel pipes with outside diameters of 73 or 89 mm and helical discs that help the pipes reach and rest at the appropriate depth. The discs themselves are pressed to achieve a three-inch pitch and subsequently shop-welded to the primary or “lead” pile. To achieve greater range, lead shafts often connect to extensions with a threaded pin-and-box system.

Important Components

Helical pilings have several important components:

• High-strength steel pipes that have been calibrated for stability and straightness
• Helical plates with diameters of eight, 10, 12 or 14 inches and thicknesses of between .375 and .5 inch
• Steel pipe extensions that lack helical plates but are otherwise identical to the lead piles
• A corrosion-resistant polyethylene copolymer coating at a minimum thickness of .46 mm

How Do They Work?

Although helical pilings have many uses in general construction applications, they’re particularly useful for stabilizing retaining walls built on filled-in or unstable sites. For instance, a recent Ram Jack project at an Ohio high school helped a construction crew overcome wild temperature swings to create a stable, durable retaining wall for a hillside parking lot.

As rising temperatures softened the frozen ground underneath the lot’s retaining wall, the ground behind the wall became increasingly unstable. By driving helical pilings to an average depth of 70 feet, Ram Jack was able to salvage the project and create a rock-solid base for the lot.
